What is a Disc Harrow? Disc Harrow Type
In the current era of farm mechanization various types of tillage implement like a plough, rotavator, ripper, power harrow, etc used for different types of farming applications, Disc harrow is one of them. It is a secondary tillage implement used for soil preparation.
Disc Harrow is one of the popular tractor implement attached on the tow hook. This harrow helps in breaking up clods and surface crusts, It also enhances soil granulation and surface uniformity, It also prevents weed growth and destroys already existing weeds.
Types of Disc Harrows
Mounted Type
The trailing type Harrows are pulled by Tractors and they do not have transport wheel. They sometimes have a transport wheel which is worked upon mechanically or hydraulically when the Harrow needs to be transferred from the fields to the farmer's place.
The Mounted Type Disc Harrow is hitched to 3 point linkage of farm tractor and It raised using hydraulic power when transportation is done.
Disc Harrows are available in many forms like:
- Single Action
- Double Action
- Offset Type
Single Action Disc Harrow
These types of Disc Harrows are used to cutting the soil in one direction. The cutting width is generally between 4’ to 20’.
Double Action Disc Harrow or Tandem Disc Harrow
Double Action Disc Harrows disks are arranged in such a way that the disc of the front gang throws the soil in one direction, and discs of rear gang throw the soil in the opposite direction. There are also called Tandem Disc Harrow, This type of harrow helps the uniform mixing of soil.
Offset Disc Harrow
Offset Disc Harrow can be worked upon in an offset position that's why it is called offset harrow. A single change in hitch makes the harrow to move either to the left or right side of the tractor. This is very popular nowadays as it gives very smooth soil. Offset Discs are available in both mounted and trailing types. Their sizes vary according to the size and capability of a tractor.
